Volunteers

Volunteer with us!

Volunteers are the backbone of everything we do. Each week, our amazing volunteers lead our activities, from offering music lessons to communal cooking or language practice. Without them, there would be no .

Join them and become part of our community!

2500+ volunteers annually
80+ free activities each month

As a volunteer, you’ll become part of an open and caring community and get access to trainings and workshops (e.g., in conflict management). You'll also receive an Ehrenamtskarte, which gives you discounts and perks across Berlin and Brandenburg. It's a fantastic way to grow, connect with others, and help us achieve our goals together.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please read the following section carefully. It will tell you about the volunteering process, what to expect, and how to join our community.

What kind of volunteers are you looking for?

We are constantly looking for volunteers who are keen to share their skills, time, and expertise and who can create a supportive atmosphere for participants. Each programme is looking for different people. Our Open Music School, for example, is usually looking for music teachers, while our language cafés are sometimes in need of competent speakers. Outside of our regular programmes, we are looking for people to help us set up and run events, such as community gatherings, assist with graphic design, and support communication and fundraising.

You can also give a workshop on a topic dear to you (e.g., programming languages, creative writing, dance, etc.) in our Community Hub.

Sometimes we are looking for individuals with specialized skills (such as teachers for a particular instrument). We are posting these calls for volunteers on our social media.

We typically only accept volunteers who are 18 years of age or older.

What skills do I need to volunteer?

We are looking for friendly, open-minded people who are willing to share their skills and time. Beyond that, you don’t need any prerequisites. We typically speak English or German in our activities, but we try to make any language and language levels work. You also don’t need to be an expert in any topic; you just have to be willing to share, teach, and learn. For example, you don’t need to be a professional musician or music teacher to volunteer in our Open Music School, and you don’t need to be a chef to cook in our Open Kitchen.

How much time do I have to commit?

Some programmes require little time commitment. For example, in our open language cafés, we are looking for volunteers who can drop by whenever they have a chance. Other programs, particularly those involving children, require a 6-month minimum commitment.

What will I receive as a volunteer?

We will provide onboarding so that you can feel secure in your work with us. As a volunteer, you have access to special trainings and workshops (e.g., in conflict management), and we will do our best to help you grow and connect with others. We also host a volunteer appreciation party once a year.

What if I have other questions?

If you still have open questions, please contact us at welcome@hejmoberlin.org.

Which program you would like to volunteer for?

Each project is different. Volunteering at Open Kitchen, for example, is as easy as showing up, coordinating shopping, and cutting vegetables, while our Open Hearts Space volunteers undergo a more comprehensive process. Before volunteering with us, please check out our programs to see which would be a good fit for you. You can check out the requirements below.
