Nowruz: Remembrance, Reflection, and Renewal

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, marks the beginning of spring: a celebration of renewal, of light returning, of nature awakening after winter. The word itself carries this promise: from “nu” (new) and “roj” (day), evolving through “newroz” - a new day, a rebirth.

But this year feels different. As violence and uncertainty continue to shape daily life in Iran and Afghanistan, and affect many across the wider region, we cannot gather without acknowledging the weight many are carrying. This Nowruz, we want to hold space for grief, for remembrance, for conflicting emotions, for the complexity of celebrating while parts of our communities are experiencing profound hardship.

Nowruz has always symbolised the end of darkness and the rebirth of nature. Perhaps this year, rebirth does not mean forgetting the darkness, but gently bringing light to one another. Holding hands. Standing in solidarity. Allowing collective mourning while also making room for hope.

Our gathering invites all communities that celebrate Nowruz and their friends, to come together in reflection and connection.

As always, food will be prepared with care by our Open Kitchen team, and the space will be open for whatever feels needed: conversation, quiet presence, remembrance, and small gestures of renewal.

This year, our Nowruz is a moment of coming together - in remembrance, in reflection, and in renewal.
