The office is located in Refugio Berlin, a co-living space where 35 new and long-term Berliners live and work together in Neukölln.

Position Overview

The Program Director leads the strategic development, coordination, and implementation of Hejmo’s programs and community initiatives. We are looking for a thoughtful and strategic leader who combines strong organisational skills with a deep commitment to community work. The role combines strategic thinking with hands-on collaboration, ensuring that projects are well-supported, aligned with Hejmo’s mission, and responsive to emerging community needs. Working closely with Project Managers, the Director, and the Partnerships and Finance Managers, the Program Director oversees program delivery, strengthens partnerships, and supports the wellbeing and development of the project team, participants, volunteers, interns, and external partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee all programs and projects, supporting Project Managers in budget planning, goal-setting, monitoring, cost control, evaluation, and delivery.
  • Coordinating, compiling and monitoring project reports and supporting financial planning and forecasting.
  • Ensure programs align with Hejmo’s mission, values, and long-term strategy.
  • Coordinate the overall program and activity calendar across Hejmo’s spaces and projects.
  • Review and develop ideas for new inclusive activities and initiatives proposed by Project Managers that respond to the needs of diverse communities.
  • Nurture and maintain outreach strategies, and strategic partnerships that benefit the organisation’s programs.
  • Support the wellbeing and professional development of the team of Project Managers.
  • Oversee the management and effective use of Hejmo’s spaces and facilities.
  • Ensure reporting requirements are met for internal leadership, donors, and partners.
  • Develop and implement accessibility, health and safety, and awareness strategies across programs, spaces, and communications.

Profile and Key Qualities

  • At least 3 years project management experience preferably designing and managing community-based programs or similar initiatives.
  • Experience managing budgets and coordinating complex projects, experience with state and EU-funded projects a plus.
  • A collaborative leadership style built on trust, openness, and clear communication.
  • Sensitivity to issues surrounding migration, diversity, and community dynamics.
  • Confidence representing the organisation publicly and building external partnerships.
  • Curiosity about grassroots initiatives and the ability to support diverse projects.
  • A calm, reflective approach to leadership and conflict resolution.
  • Strong commitment to accessibility and inclusive practices.
  • English required, German highly desirable.
